The Great Ban on Alcohol!!!
Prohibition was being pushed into Canada by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and they finally got their way. In 1901, Prince Edward Island forbid the sales and drinking of intoxicating beverages, and soon after PEI and Newfoundland baned liquor during WW1. Enforcement was becoming difficult, but drinking-related crimes went down significantly, but after the war drinking crimes rose dramtically. Illegal stills all over were making a new liquor called "moonshine". Moonshine is 75% alcohol and is illegal to make and sell today. Some may have seen the show on tv called "moonshiners"! People were making underground stills and even private drinking places. Many of these places were busted and many people were arrested by police, and the illegal bars were destroyed.
